Beef Feeding Guidelines
At Kaniksu Feeds, we pride ourselves in providing quality feed for our community and nothing makes us happier than seeing local kids utilize our feed for their 4-H and FFA projects. To be eligible for the Kaniksu Feeds Loyalty Award, participants must follow the feeding guidelines for their species.
It is crucial to know the dates of fair and spring weigh-in when selecting a steer. Most steers should be around 1 year of age at spring weigh-in and should already be eating a grain ration.
We require feeding either Kaniksu Feeds Show Steer or Complete Steer Grower/Finisher. These feeds are a complete rationed feeds that should not be supplemented with any other grain, supplements or commercial feeds.
It is important to keep in mind that most steers will finish out between 1,200-1,400lbs and an average daily gain between 2.5-3.5lbs should be achieved.
Steers should be started on a grain ration a minimum of 1 week prior to spring weigh-in. Feed should be increased in small increments, up to 2% of their body weight per day. Depending on rate of gain goals, steers can be pushed to a feed rate of up to 2.5% of their body weight per day.
It is recommended to keep free choice, long stem grass hay available.
We recommend avoiding alfalfa hay due to the risk of bloat when combined with Kaniksu Feeds Show Steer or Complete Steer Grower/Finisher.
Always provide fresh, clean water and adequate shelter from the elements.
Consult your project leader for the best management practices for your steer.
